Qalamkar technique is the art of painting with brush or printing design with wood block stamps on natural-based fabrics such as cotton and silk ."A Piece of Paradise" is a Qalamkar tablecloth created by Nasrin Shaygan Maher over three months using the calico work technique, which involves hand-painting with a brush. The design draws inspiration from celestial imagery of the Qajar era and traditional Aslimi motifs commonly found in Qalamkar. The framing is influenced by designs seen in Iranian rugs and traditional book illustrations. The story behind the design was not predetermined. Instead, it was inspired by the concept of the supreme heaven and the angels who serve as its guardians and caretakers, continuously embellishing and adorning this eternal garden. Alongside this beautiful endeavor, in this artwork, angels on another plane of existence gather around the garden, offering praise to this sacred paradise. To bring this artwork to life, plant-based local paints, such as dry tragacanth, black and white alum, pomegranate peel, and runas, were applied to a high-quality cotton fabric woven in Yazd. To care for this tablecloth, wash it using enzyme-free and bleach-free detergents, and iron it at a temperature suitable for cotton fabrics.
